Pulmonary medicine

Pulmonology is a medical speciality that deals with research, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of pulmonary diseases and disorders of the respiratory system, especially the lower respiratory tract, diseases of parietal pleura and mediastinum.

Acute diseases involve serious infectious diseases of the respiratory system, accompanied by dyspnea, bleeding in the respiratory tract and other complications. These are especially bronchitis and pneumonia (the cases when pulmologists cooperate with infectious disease medicine). As for chronic infections, pulmonology is the main speciality dealing with tuberculosis.

Non-infectious diseases that are studied and treated by pulmonology are most frequently bronchial asthma (in cooperation with immunologists and allergologists), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung diseases, also pulmonary trombo-embolism and together with oncology also lung tumours which belong to the most frequent carcinome diseases. Pulmonology also treats some congenital diseases.
